Dear CMC Students, Faculty, and Staff;

Per inter-campus agreement, I am forwarding this security alert from Harvey Mudd College’s Associate Dean of Students, Chris Sundberg.

I know that this email comes on the heels of another security alert that I just sent a short time ago from Scripps College. It’s unusually odd to receive two separate security alerts within minutes of each other. It’s not clear at this time whether they are un-related or related. Should we discover a connection, or if we have additional information to share with you, we will let you know ASAP.

Sincerely,

Jeff Huang

Harvey Mudd College

Today at 2:50pm, a student was sleeping in his room on the first floor of Linde dorm when he noticed a person on the outside removing his screen and opening his window. As he rose to further explore the situation, the perpetartor attempted to gain entry until he saw the student. Upon noticing the student, the perpetrator ran N to Foothill Blvd. and E to Claremont Blvd.

Perpetrator Description: Light skinned male, early to mid 20's, 5'10" tall, average build, wearing a white tee shirt, jeans and a black backpack.

Will liberty suffer from security?

Why is Pomona working on copyright security when we have bigger fish to fry?

A few weeks ago, I went to a Pomona dance party where they carded everyone. I thought it was a passing thing. But now, I see that the Mudders have responded with tighter security at the Suds party (aka the Foam Party, ranked one of the best parties ever.) Note the Foam Party where only Scripps and Mudders are invited. (To be fair, the other Cs can get in, but only if they got the connection with a Mudder.)

Given that Mudders are reclusive critters seldom seen in day light, security might let the Mudders get a chance to actually meet women before CMCers whisk them away. Maybe they figure if they ban all the other schools but Scripps, the girls might just overlook their sheer nerdiness out of total desperation. Good luck, buddies. You'll need it.

Pitzer's Jose Calderon: Count Illegals For Congressional Seats

I've blogged before about my favorite Pitzer punching bag, Professor Jose Calderon and his views on good racism and bad racism. But this issue really takes the cake: he supports illegal immigrants being counted for congressional seats.

But Jose Calderon, professor of sociology and Chicano Studies at Pitzer College, sees the inclusion of illegal immigrants in the count to be extremely important and the political shift as something positive for the country.

"With a large immigrant, and even undocumented population, they're not all staying undocumented, they're moving to permanent residency status. Some of them didn't know they could get permanent residency and many permanent residents become citizens," said Calderon.

The consequences of this decision could not be understated:
Although illegal immigrants can't vote, the report says their growing numbers are affecting the nation's political balance because they are counted in the once-a-decade Census. That population tally determines how seats in the House of Representatives are split among the states and is also used to distribute more than $180 billion in federal aid each year.
Basically, the fact that the government counts illegals in the census means that California and other states are encouraged to bring in more illegals to increase their political power in Washington. It's the same exact phenomenon, Akhil Amar, remarked that led to the Civil War: Prior to the early 1800's, Southern states could increase their political power in the House by importing black slaves. Plus ca change, plus c'est le meme chose. Citizenship is devalued once more.

Following Pitzer's Lead Berkeley Posts Classes on YouTube

Well, if Pitzer does it, did you really think Berkeley would be far behind?

Instead of just taking a class on YouTube, Berkeley offers a much more radical solution: putting all classes on YouTube.

This is truly a stupendous idea! Students will love to be at the forefront of the technological revolution, baby. They'll watch their classes over and over again just to hear their esteemed professors speak about the benefits of derivatives or the finer particularities of class-based literature.

Oh wait, you mean students won't go to class because their classes are available online? You mean that they'll just use them for right before midterms? Oh no!
