City Council Allows Building of Kravis Center

I don't have a dog in this fight as I don't much want to see the new center built which I believe will adversely affect my education at Claremont McKenna, but I also don't want to see a group veto the property rights of another group.

In striking down the appeal, however; Claremont's City Council shows itself to be very hypocritical once more. It was not too long ago that it banned beauty shops in downtown Claremont under the guise that there were too many. Surely they ought to ban the growth of the colleges as Claremont has the highest number of highly ranked colleges than any other place in America.

Still read the story for yourself.

CLAREMONT

Despite objections from neighbors, the City Council has turned down an appeal on the approval of Claremont McKenna College's plans to construct a new building on the campus. Arbol Verde neighborhood residents and others raised concerns about the proposed 162,000-square-foot Kravis Building to be located between Eighth and Ninth streets on Columbia Avenue. The council on a vote of 4-1 denied the appeal of the approval of the building because of claims the work would negatively impact the Arbol Verde neighborhood. The building will house college academic and administrative offices. The appeal came from Alfonso Villanueva and the Arbol Verde Preservation Committee.

I think the interesting story here is the people who opposed the building. The Arbol Verde neighborhood is the area south and west of the children's school, where a lot of the school provided rentals are for faculty and staff. What's strange though is that Arbol Verde is clearly pretty far away from the Kravis Center. Apparently there's a negative history with the community and CMC (http://ihighpoint.net/claremontheritage/download.cfm?ID=13546), which leads me to believe they filed this motion against CMC out of pure spite. I had heard some in Claremont hate the colleges, but this seems to be taking it to the extreme.

kind of like the people who call noise complaints on big weekend parties before they've even been set up.
