Maria Klawe was a guest blogger over at Tech Her on August 25.
Tech Her is the blog of Telle Whitney, CEO of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology, and says that it is "dedicated to the recruitment, retention and advancement of technical women in high tech and academia."
Klawe writes,
As president of Harvey Mudd College (the most wonderful undergraduate institution for science and engineering I’ve ever encountered), and Dean of Engineering [Science] and Princeton [UBC] (two other superb institutions), one of my goals has been to increase the number of female undergraduate students in engineering and computer science.One of her goals? Why should college presidents get to set "goals" as to who is and who is not admitted to their college? When she says goal, I hear "quota." And it is unfortunate because what this nation so desperately needs isn't more women computer scientists or engineers, but more computer scientists and engineers. She later writes that "there are no silver bullets that will instantly solve the 'few women in technology' issue," which, of course, assumes that there is an issue in the first place and that she is the one to "solve" it.
On an aside point, what is it about college presidents wading into social engineering and policy advocating? Shouldn't they be, you know, presiding over the college?

I assume you'll be printing a copy of this post out and delivering it to Ms. Klawe so you can inform her of her dereliction of duty and get her back on track?
