Expect a full response in the coming days, but The Forum recently ran a piece by Nico Brancolini about Proposition 8's passage. His post is revealing in that it outlines basically all the agitprop that those favoring Prop. 8 have been ramming down our throats. It includes the usual argument that gay marriage will have a monogamizing effect on homosexuals, even though lots of evidence gathered in Europe where gay marriage has been legal suggests that few gays ever get married and that they have a much higher rate of divorce.
Nico offhandedly says that those favoring Proposition 8 "wantonly lied" about gay marriage in other states. Maybe he hasn't heard about all lawsuits against religious people in states that have been forced to recognize gay marriage by court order. Here's the whole list, if you're interested in perusing it. They include attacks on adoption agencies, churches, and even the Boyscouts of America.
Instead Nico calls Mormonism, the religion of 10 million people, a "creepy cabal."
I frankly don't understand why anyone would hate on Mormons. They don't blow themselves up; they give to charity. They don't father children out of wedlock, or take from government welfare. By and large, they keep to themselves.
Of course CMC will never send out a bias-related incident email about hatred against Mormons. Nope, that's okay. After all, Mormons aren't a protected class.

The "creepy cabal" comment was perhaps a bit offensively snarky, but calling it a "bigotted gay activist rant" is a little extreme. Take a few breaths, Charles.
And while discrimination is not to be accepted (and tolerant Mormons, especially, to be respected), the LDS Church has loudly and actively declared itself an enemy of gay rights, and should be expected to be treated as such by those seeking civil equality.
"Should be expected to be treated as such"??????? Vandalizing and scrawling graffiti on their most sacred places of worship? Shouting obscenities? Death threats? To a religion that made up MAYBE 4% of the Yes vote??? (and that is a VERY generous estimate)
Some try to contend they "deserve" this deplorable treatment because members of the church donated much of their time, efforts and money towards effort. Never mind the fact the no on 8 raised MORE money than yes on 8...and MORE of no on 8 money came from out of state AND out of the country.
And that darn assumption of marriage being a "RIGHT". If marriage were a RIGHT than marriage as a RIGHT should be extended to ALL citizens. It wouldn't matter who or what or how many.
The state recognizes marriage and offers certain benefits to those joining in marriage. They issue certificates to manage this. Gay and lesbian couples who form loving commitments wanted the same rights. Thankfully, we live in a state that DOES offer RIGHTS to all. They were granted recognition of their loving, long-term relationships by having the EXACT same rights offered to them through the domestic partnership act. Have you seen LDS church members trying to take away those rights? NO. NO. and....NO.
The tyranny of tolerance that the gay community is displaying is nothing short of disgusting.
If you think the conservative Mormons voted Yes on 8, how conservative was the Muslim vote? Nobody seemed to vandalize them. That would bring out the bias-police...
Actually, the FLDS mooches thousands of dollars in welfare every year.
Oh please, anon. (nice that you hide behind anonymity) FLDS wouldn't claim the LDS church or members as their own if you PAID them. The fundamentalist have nothing to do with the LDS church and especially not their leadership. (That's the whole reason they broke off from the church over 100 years ago) It's like calling a Protestant a Catholic. Or a Muslim a terrorist....
Just one point, although I'm fairly sure Charles knows this and was being flippant. Mormonism *is* a protected class, as it is a religion. (See California Penal Code 422.55(a)(5).)
Uh... maybe I should have been clearer. "Treated as such" means treated as such legally. Of course I'm not advocating vandalism, death threats, and other assorted barbarisms. I understand the frustrations of those commiting such acts, but it's counter-productive and unacceptable.
amy... MAYBE you could use MORE capital letters to get ACROSS your POINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we ALL know that USING capital letters makes your POINT far more EFFECTIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On a sidenote. Who are you, and why do you care what some kid writes on a college site or what some other kid's ridiculous response to that first post was? Also, so much for charles' assertion that "for the most part, [Mormons] keep to themselves", you certainly can't. Seriously, go back to your "full time mommying" or be an ass on your own blogs, I mean, you've got 5. Was there not enough room for your bitching?
theresa, I heart you. lucas, you too.
Maybe you should learn how to spell the word "bigoted," Charles.
The one comment on the redirected site is "Charles is a douche". Anonymous gossip might not be able to survive on the internet and I prefer it that way. You make some very interesting arguments Charles I don't agree with alot of them, but it's always a pleasure to read. Sorry people make personal attacks, as Andy Warhol says "Don't read the content of what they write, just measure it in inches."
